Deborah Coleman

I love her music. She's a relatively young female guitarist. But for me, her music clearly belongs to the legendary league that includes Janis Joplin and Nancy Wilson. Currently listening to Soft Place to Fall by her. Its a fantastic number with some fantabulous guitaring. Download / listen to it here or here (will be up for 2 days).

MBAs: The Elite?

See this story (B-school grads shun 'old' jobs) in today's ET about how MBAs dont wanna join non-glamorous sectors of the industry.

A perfect supplement to this story would be this dig on MBA in FedEx commercial. :-)

Present

Queering Bangalore
a film festival on queer lives

over three days - 3, 4, 5 October 2003
at Attakalari, (behind Gallery Sumukha)
Bus Depot Road, Wilson Garden, Bangalore

Queering Bangalore is the first public film festival in Bangalore focussing entirely on queer rights. Featured at the festival are award winning documentaries and features, commended for their portrayal of life stories and issues facing lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, hijras, kothis and others identifying as 'queer.' They have reached audiences in film festivals across the world from Montreal to Berlin and have successfully created spaces for the queer community everywhere. Our intention here in Bangalore is to not only focus on the violence perpetrated by society, law, the State, family and other such institutions but more importantly to celebrate a community with all its complexities. the panel discussions meant to sharpen focus will feature activists and others who have worked with and on the issues facing the queer movement in Ind! ia today.

PROGRAMME SCHEDULE
3 October 2003 (Friday): 5 to 7 p.m. - Inaugural address followed by a short film and discussion on "queer"
4 October 2003 (Saturday): 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Celluloid Closet, Before Stonewall, The Wedding Banquet, Ma Vie En Rose (My life in Pink), Beautiful Thing ! ;
5 October 2003 (Sunday): 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. - Paper Flowers, Kee Kautha Taahar Shaathe, Dark and Lovely, Soft and Free, The Brandon Teena Story, The Watermelon Woman, Before Night Falls, My Beautiful Laundrette

Queering Bangalore is an attempt to focus on the lives and experiences of a community invisibilised by systemic homophobia and transphobia. In history's weave of cultural tapestry these are the life stories that are missing and left untold. And yet it is the queer movement in India and elsewhere that is providing the much needed challenges to heteronormativity, i.e. the binding definitions of what a marriage and family is, the gendered role plays within these etc. At a time when we are surrounded by shackling definitions of the 'ideal family', 'ideal husband, wife, daughter-in-law', it becomes important to recognize and highlight these challenges inherent in our society.

Pedestrian Pictures is a media activist group based in Bangalore, working for the past 2 years against the development paradigm in place today. The medium of films is our tool to initiate discussions and hence actions on issues ranging from war and militarisation to adivasi rights and queer rights.

Scorus is an endeavour to create social spaces for the queer community.

Swabhava Trust (est. 1999) is a non-government organisation that works with sexuality, HIV/AIDS and sexual health concerns, providing access to support services for the queer community.

The Safety and Quality Challenges for Indian Food Exports

As a part of the FPM Research Workshop, just now attended a presentation on this topic by Prof. Aparna Sawhney (Econcomics and Social Sciences Area). Got to know a lil bit about what happens in food exports at international policy/institution level.

Abstract:
Food items constitute the largest share of the Indian agricultural exports, and the returns on fresh and processed food in world markets have increased, especially in the US and Western Europe. At the same time food exports have begun to face increasing safety and quality standards. The food quality and health standards requirements for global food trade are legal under the provision of the WTO Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS) and to some extent under the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT). Indian food exports have faced market access problems due to failure to comply with safety and quality standards effective in developed country markets. In particular, the paper examines the key food quality challenges faced by Indian food exports in the US market, and the strategy required to boost exports.

Shaping the Future of Storage

Attended this seminar organized by Netapp yesterday at The Leela. The speakers were Dave Hitz (Cofounder & EVP, Engineering), Manish Goel (President, Indian Operations), and Mr Dwarkanathan (Product Engineering Services CTO, Wipro). Netapp has started an Indian operations center where they have shifted FULLY the development of one of the four key products, Netcache. Its a caching / streaming exnterprise application tool. Other products are NetStore, Filers, and Gateway(?).

Dave Hitz is a pioneer in storge industry and has been personally involved in some of the key innovations in storage technology. Dave said that SAN and NAS have been a soure of great deal of confusion amongst technology people in companies, and he suggested (and also predicted) that these two need to merge into FAS (Fiber Attached Storage). And he explained, why and how. The analogy was with routers, switches: First it was Router VS Switches, then it was Router AND Switches, and now they are moving toward layer 7 'switches' (unified). Essentially, a Router takes care of packets at layer 4, 5, and 6, while a switch at layers 1, 2, and 3. Hence the new approach is to combine the two and remove confusion. Same thing would happen with SAN and NAS converging into FAS, Dave said.

One interesting statistic was the decline in the DAS (Direct Attached Storage) market size: from 14b$ in 2000 to 6b$ in 2002 (according to IDC)! Thats a sureshot indication of storage preferences shifting from disk to the network. Gotta keep an eye on this industry, sounds very exciting!

Manish mainly dwelled upon why Indian IT scene today is so exciting. Taking his personal example, he demonstrated how there were not many opportnities for an engineer wanting to work in s/w indusrty when he graduated from IIT 20 years back, and how the scenario has changed completely today.

Takeaway: An overview of storage industry and what Netapp is doing, esp. in India.

Yahoogroups Blocked in India

This is a classic case of a serious goof-up by the spineless ISPs toeing the government line. I myself was unable to access yahoogroups for one full week before it was restored by our ISP, STPI.

Some news in media about it at:
Bid to block anti-India website affects users (Hindu)
Yahoo website blocked (Times of India)
Govt blocks e-group but can’t prevent access (Hindustan Times)

Also, wherever you are in the world, and you wanna get around the government censorships, try Peacefire or Anonymizer

Prof Madhukar Shukla of XLRI gives a complete picture below.

Folks!
Due to bungling between GOI and ISPs, for many of us, it is not possible to access the yahoo groups site at all !!!

GOI had asked the ISPs to block access to a particular yahoogroup site, however, many ISPs have blocked access to entire yahoogroups site. (It may not effect many yahoogroups members, but it does hinder moderators to do their job - and therefore, the effectiveness of the groups)

I am enlosing a copy of a copy of the government GO, which is also available at:

http://corporate.ddsl.net/images/sc1.gif It is from the Ministry of Communications and IT - LR Cell, signed by Jayant Kumar, Director, LR II (tel # 011 23372601). It tells ISPs to block http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/kynhun/ - and definitely not to block the whole of yahoogroups.

The only recourse is to send petition to the Hon'ble Minister of Communiation and IT, Mr Arun Shourie, to intervene. I am pasting a message below, and request you to cut-copy-paste it, and send to his mailids (which are give below) Please forward this message to as many yahoogroups as you can (and not listed in "To:" above)

thanks for your initiative and cooperation

ciao madhukar

Sh. Arun Shourie, Hon'ble Minister for Communication and Information Technology Government of India

Dear Sh. Shourie,

Sub: Protection of Right to freedom of speech & expression

Please refer to order No. 820-1/2003-LR(Vol.I) dated 10/09/2003 of Department of Telecommunication under your Ministry regarding directions to block Internet website "groups.yahoo.com/groups/kynhu" .

We believe that the Ministry of Communication must be having necessary reasons to block the above website. Any such censoring in National Interest / National Security is welcome. However it is pointed out that certain ISP's have implemented the said order by blocking the entire domain groups.yahoo.com.

Consequently a number of citizens in the country are not able to access various yahoo groups across the country. It is brought to your notice that the citizens use the free services of yahoo to exchange ideas and remain connected with one another. However consequent to the above order the exchange of free flow of information has come to a halt.

Having known you as a former Editor and champion of Freedom of Speech , it was surprising to know that such an order can come through a Ministry headed by you.

The Intellectuals across the country feel that censoring of Internet may lead the citizens of the country far behind in the fast changing world. Time memorial have proved that no censorship has ever worked in the country. Despite all odds in the country it is this freedom to speech that makes Indian citizens feel proud of their nation. It is this freedom that makes India different from China.

We therefore request you to personally intervene and either ensure the proper implementation of the order whereby only "groups.yahoo.com/groups/kynhu" is blocked by ISP's or alternately withdraw the above order and ensure Right to freedom of speech & expression of all Citizens.

It is further requested that the rules under which the above order was passed may be re-looked and if possible a representative from amongst the Journalist world may be brought in the committee which examines such blockage of website. It should not happen that Bureaucrats/ Politicians use above tool to infringe the fundamental right to freedom of speech of citizens.

With a special appeal to the Journalist in you.

Best Regards,

A Concerned Citizen

Adiga's

I go to Adiga's (restaurant) outlet near our campus quite often. This particular outlet of the Adiga's chain is on Bannerghatta Road, bang opposite the HSBC and Accenture call centres (thats what I think they are, but not sure).

The crowd level there got me thinking about the revenures of this restaurant. Making some fair assumptions (avg billing of Rs 20 in the self-service section, 100 footfalls per meal -thrice a day; and 40 Rs in the 'served' section, 50 footfalls per meal - thrice a day; ), I did some rough calculations, and I came up with the figure of 3,60,000 Rs / month. Taking modest 10% NET profit margin (which is low in restaurant industry), the absolute profit is 36,000 Rs! I am sure this is a very conservative estimate, and u'd agree if u've been to this place. But even taking this conservative figure, its an amount that a lot of IIM graduates dont get as take-home salary when they join jobs from campus!

Just a small restaurant, which we dont give a second thought about, making more money than the graduates of most preferred business schools. Something to think about!

Kellogg's Dipak Jain

Dipak Jain, Dean at Kellogg has been networking furiously with the institute's alumni. If you remember correctly, during the last few tech-bust years when the jobs for MBAs were not a-coming, Dipak Jain went all out on a sort of road trip across USA meeting alumni working in who's who of America Inc. And results paid off.

Maybe we need someone like him in my engineering alma mater. I am sure there are Dipak Jains in every IIT and IIM who make these place what they are. Can we find one at HBTI?

An Economist Article on his job.

2. Next trek2clean trek - 27th Sept Saturday, World Tourism day!

Hi Guys,

Some more garbage collection! After having done a preliminary trek2clean trek to Shivagange in June, its time to get going on a much more larger and intense scale as such is the pollution (mainly plastic) over here.

For those who don't know, this place is about 60km from Bangalore, known for the Shivagange math, but is also famous as a trek route and a great spot for rock climbers. There is a big temple complex at the early part of the hill, then a long trek to a natural spring half way to the top, now part of a temple. Further up there is a long route (steep towards the end) to the top, where there is a huge 'Nandi' carved onto the peak.

Though the stretch seems quite clean initially, there is a lot lot of plastics as we go higher till the spring, and then there is another spot at the peak that is bad.

The plan is as below:

6.30 am Assemble at Victoria Statue, Cubbon Park (near Jewel de Paragon).

6.45 am Departure

8.15 am Reach Shivagange, breakfast time!

9.00 am Start the trek to clean.

12.30 am Break for lunch and some maasti!

3.00 pm Start cleaning again.

5.30 pm Start winding up.

6.00 pm Head back home.

7.45 pm Back at Victoria statue.

Costs should be within Rs. 175/-, the balance money will go into the trek2clean corpus. To confirm your participation, you have hand over an advance of Rs. 175/- advance to Sheila Castelino or one of the group members mentioned below by 23rd Sept Tuesday evening latest.

Breakfast, Lunch, juice breaks and energy packs will be provided. Please wear comfortable clothing - tracks/ cargo pants, T shirts. Light colors would be ideal. Please wear sports shoes which are comfortable for long walks, but also good for climbing.

Please bring the following. It would be preferable to carry these items in a SMALL BACK PACK, so that your hands are free..

- 2 bottles of 2 liters of water. This is a must.
- cap - recommended, or maybe a bandana or something to protect you from the
heat.
- torch with batteries (good to carry for any trek).
- sun tan lotion - advisable
- gloves - advisable
- sun glasses -optional
- camera - optional

You will be handed a sack and a prong to collect garbage. We also have some other tools to help us. This is booze free trek.

Await your confirmations by return mail, by 23rd Sept (Tuesday) latest!
Please reply to:

One weekend and two lunches

It was a perfect weekend starting with meeting a friend on friday night over some vodka and beer. We had an interesting discussion on men-women relationships, esp. in workplace, wherein she herself admitted that women are always aware of what guys want from them, and that mostly they (girls) use this generous attention to get the work done. Sign... We poor (Or, is it stupid?) guys :( And just when the discussions were hotting up, our small party was gate-crashed by weekend revellers (seriously, we need more privacy in hostels!). Anyways, much to my relief, my friend reached home safely at 0200 after downing a full quarter of Romanov.

On Saturday, went over to another friend's place to look at her UK travel pics. And she ended up making lunch for both of us. Home-made food after a long time, it was Nirvana. But in my earnet desire to help her with the cooking, I ended up spilling a lot of sabji on the floor! And that's when I decided that I could help her more by staying outta kitchen. The pics were great, espeically of the Bath city, and lunch was perfect.

In the evening, I watched "When Harry Met Sally", second time. I love this movie because the guy's character is so much like me. He also believes that a man and a woman can not be just friends (he says it in a mild version of famous/infamous 'Maine Pyar Kiya' dialogue. Actually these 2 movies came out about the same time, so I dont think either copied this dialogue from the other. Guess it just means that it is the truth!). Actually, later in film he goes on to live a true friendship relationship with his girl-friend (not girlfriend), Meg Ryan. Its a fantastic movie and what a coincidence that I had a discussion on similar kinda theme just the day before, as mentioned above. What I like the most about this movie though is the ending line (warning: spoiler ahead): "I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." This line was my mail signature for quite sometime before I removed it for lest some recipient should interpret it wrongly. Needless to say though, I love this line.

And then, on Sunday, we had our small Bangalore iimb2000 (batch of 2000) get-together. Me and Jai went to MG's place, from where we all went to this place called "Feast of Asia". It is a nice restaurant housed in a former IT-company building. Its located very close to National Games Village on the main road. Total se7en people showed up and even though we tried hard to get Srikant to pay for his new job (leaving ICICI Ventures to join E&Y), we didn't succeed :-) The lunch happened over nice discussions of women bosses, esp in ICICI. I was told that Business World even featured a cover story on "Kamath's Angels"! Also featured in discussions was the agenda of marriage and surprisingly it turned out that everybody's been trying to get married for sometime now! And then somebody told about Naru who, apparently, during 2001 and 2002 on every weekend used to go see 1 or 2 girls. And everybody agreed that he must have surveyed the whole eligible, in-the-market population (census) rather than taking a small sample!

All in all, it was a fun weekend :)

One more goodie from Google

Google never ceases to surprise. Maybe you already know about a now-not-so-new feature called Google Calculator. Just try typing 131*132 , or sin(75) (remember its case-specific) etc in google and see the results!

But what really takes the cake is this: The answer to life, the universe, and everything! This sure is a treat to Hitch Hiker's Guide to Galaxy fans like me!!

Google rocks (and calculates too!)

More on 70s' Chile and its economic reforms

Do free market reforms lead to better life? Its a hotly debated topic everywhere, and especially amongst academic economists. Chile underwnet such reforms in mid-70s under the junta of Augusto Pinochet:

Continuing on my yesterday's post on Chile, before the coup d'etat on the September 11th, 1973, the government of Salvadore Allende was following the 'theory of economic dependency' which essentially says that you have to raise barriers for the outside world to do trade with you in order to grow your (domestic) economy. On the Chilean reforms, one point of view can be that Pinochet's military led rebellion in early 70s was in reality a puppet-led coup because behind the scenes (actually not so covertly!) the show was being managed by the CIA. But you have to also understand that the incumbent government of Salvadore Allende was not doing anything better on the economic front. Salvadore was not even able to control the temples of modernization - PSUs - efficiently!

Now, even though the military regime of Augustus Pinochet was brutal and resulted in killing of 2400 people, spiralling inflation, and extremely vulnerable economy, it ultimately paved the way for the free market reforms by bringing in Milton Friedman and Chicago coterie. But as you can guess easily, the transition period was extremely painful for the Chileans. Accordingly, one negative fallout of the whole Chilean rebellion of early 70s was that due to the political hue - dictatorship - of the time, and its brutalities, free market reforms came to be seen as negative and other Latin American economies shied away from introducing market reforms. But you have to see that these two are, in reality, not related at all. In fact, in Chile, introducing the free market reforms actually led to a democracy after a few years! Augusto Pincohet was arrested in London some 5-6 years ago for his atrocities.

To conclude, even if we leave the economic impact of free market reforms on Chileans aside, free markets did sort of work by leading to a free political environment!!

PS: More on free-market reforms soon.

2. Forest Outing: Navdarshanam
-----Original Message-----
From: Prakriti - The Nature Club

Subject: Forest Outing: Navdarshanam

Dear IIMB Community Members

To refresh you and give you a healthy break from daily hectic routine at IIMB,the club is organizing a trip to Navadarshanam - a nascent forest and an Ashram near a small lush green village. We would leave at 12 pm on Sunday (14/09/03) and come back by 5 pm.

If you want to be among the lucky ones who would experience the most nature friendly place around and taste the healthy organic food, prepared with pesticide-free ingredients then email us by 2 pm. tomm. or write your name in the sheet, which will be put on mess notice board tommorow morning.

Those of you are sure of going, should reply indicating whether you want to have the food or not. Based on the number of people, the food will be ordered and mode of transportation will be arranged.

Approximate expenditure would be Rs. 100 per person for organic food and small token money to the ashram + transportation charges which would be nominal depending on the number of persons going.A guide would also accompany us to explain the things.

The Navdarshanam has following distinctiveness:

Eco-restoration: A wasteland converted to a small forest. Thousands of trees have appeared, planted by mysterious forces of nature invisible to the senses. Soil conditions have improved dramatically.

Natural farming: No chemicals and pesticides are used, the faith being that a healthy soil will take care of all plants in its bosom.

Health and food: Food items and cooking methods have been classified according to the digestibility/acidity-alkalinity. Diseases are seen as 'absence of ease,' caused by undigested food, which disturb the ecology of the of the body.

Energy: Because of the ecologically damaging nature of the technologies that generate power these days, all power requirements, including that for pumping water and for lighting, is generated through solar panels and systems.

Housing: All dwelling units at Navadarshanam have been aesthetically designed and constructed with the help of alternative technologies, using eco-friendly concepts and locally available material and labour.

Looking forward to explore a different world with you.

Regards

Prakriti@IIMB

Sep 11 1973 / 2001 / 2003

Today happens to be the second anniversary of WTC attacks in 2001. Everybody knows that. What very few people would recall though is that today also happens to be the 26th anniversay of the 1973 blooded coup d'etat in Chile. That coup was a historic change of regime in Chile wherein the incumbent government of Salvadore Allende was replaced by the military junta of Augusto Pinochet. Thr run-up to the coup saw the choking-off of aids/investments to Chile by world economies, led by the USA and the CIA-led coup itself saw the kiling of Allende. With the new dictator government started the economically painful period of Chile which would surprisingly end within a few years giving way to the democracy. How? More on that tommorrow..

"In the name of the father" and Che Guevera

In one prison cell scene in "In the Name of The Father" (see my earlier post on this movie), you can see a poster of Che Guevera on the wall with his war-cry slogan "Hasta la victoria siempre" which roughly translated means 'Never stop until you're finished' or 'Fight till victory'. It gels so well with the spirit of the heroes (son and father both) of the movie that its being on the prison wall strikes you real emotionally.

Even as this particular time-honored image of Che always reminds one of the rebel spirit of mankind, I find this image highly enigmatic, inspiring in a very cool sort of way.

We have confirmed participation from the top 5 colleges in Bangalore. IIMB would participate in the event on a non-competitive basis. The event would be followed by a Welcom party for the exchange students.

2) Lots of PGP1s have been asking us whether we would have a party on the 21st of Sept (so that they can change their ticket reservations accordingly). We have three possible answers - yes, Yes and YES... Let's celebrate the end of term 1 with a big party.

Cheers,
Culcom

Movies over the weekend: Shrek, Kaakka Kaakka, Andaaz Apna Apna, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Lots of movies happened this weekend. I watched "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (WAoVW). Now, I was told that VW was a feminist writer and hence I thought the movie was about anti-feminism. Now, I watched the movie and I still thought it was a dig on feminism! Only, the Net says it isn't! The title is a mere play on a song 'Who's afraid of the bad wolf?" and apparently the director of the original play that this movie is based on, saw this line on a bathroom grafitti! You can see (warning: spoliers ahead!) some explainations here and here. The movie's whole cast was nominated for oscars and 2 out of 4 actually won! Anyways, the movie is quite gripping. Its set in one single night and involves a lot of psychological, sub-conscious dimensions, if you are the arty type. If you ain't the arty type, heck u wont understand it much like I didn't.

Then later in the night, I watched the remaining CD of Shrek in my room. Its a wonderful movie and most of you must have watched it already I am sure. Gawd, gimme a princess like that!. Anyways, now to talk about movies in campus on the weekend,

1. Lets start with Sambar Mafia's "Kaakka Kaakka"

Happy Onam

Lots of things happening on Onam in campus. Such as formation of a Mallu Club! But First, an explanation of the festival itself, which I really had no clue about before reading this:

Subject: Onam Celebrations

Hi

We invite you all to celebrate Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala. The Mess Committee has arranged for a special lunch today, as part of Onam celebrations. Later, there would also be a tug-of-war competition in association with Onam celebrations.

A brief Intro to Onam:

Onam, the popular harvest festival of Kerala is a happy blend of myth and reality. The ten-day Onam festival falls in August-September, coinciding with the beginning of the harvest season.

The Legend :
The celebration of the festival of Onam is based on the myth of Mahabali, a celebrated emperor of the asuras. Onam is celebrated to welcome Mahabali back to Earth and relive a period of peace and prosperity in the mythical past when Mahabali ruled over mankind. According to local belief, in a war that took place between the gods and the asuras, the asuras won. Deeply hurt by the defeat of the gods, Aditi, their mother, prayed to Lord Vishnu to destroy Mahabali, the asura king.

Consequently, Lord Vishnu, in the guise of a Brahmin boy, Vamanan, went to Mahabali and asked to grant him three steps of land. As soon as the wish was granted the boy grew into an awesome giant. With the first step he covered the whole sky, blotting out the stars. With the second he straddled the nether world. One more step and the earth would be destroyed. At that moment, Mahabali bowed his head and offered it for the last step. Vamanan pushed Mahabali deep down into the earth. However pleased by his honesty and generosity, the lord granted him a wish that he could he could visit his kingdom and people on a particular day once a year.

The Festivities :
Preparation of a floral carpet called "Athappookkalam" in front of houses, from the first day of 'Atham' to the tenth day of 'Thiruvonam' is part of the festivities. This is a symbolic gesture to welcome King Mahabali.

One of the important event of 'ONAM' festival is the vegetarian feast( ONAM SADYA ), lavishly served ,as it used to be during the glorious period of the rule of King Mahabali.

Other events include kaikottikali, pulikali (the leopard dance) and the famous boat races.

Cheers,
Culcom

Pyar Zindagi Hai

Couple of days back my newspaper guy came bill collecting early morning (0700 hrs) and found me dancing while working on computer- sitting in chair and all - to this. Now, I have never been into remixes really, but this groovy number has really got me! Puritan debates apart, remixes do rock sometimes! At least this one does. EnJoY!

Will Blogger Survive?

Blogger/Blogspot was down for almost whole of yesterday. I think it was never meant to serve the kinda load it serves currently. I fail to understand why Google bought it anyway. The only reason I can think of is that they cud remove blog-noise from their general web search. But my feeling is that blogger has become just a cost center for google and hence they aint paying it much attention.

"MBA Over" Celebrations - 2 more terms to go

As Blogger was down most of yesterday, I am posting it now (even though party happened yesterday). Why? Because the mail is indication of the fact how students slog their asses off till 4th term only and have total fun in 5th and 6th terms! You see, grades in placements are counted only upto term 4th. Get the idea? :-)

Deccan Air, contd..

Deccan Air reminds me of Sam Walton's Walmart. Like Walmart, Deccan's basic strategy is discounting/low prices. Like Walmart, Deccan's essential territory is hinterland/country. And more importantly, like Walmart, the incumbent biggies (in aviation) dont seem to give a rat's ass about Deccan's fledgling efforts. I hope they (incumbents) dont realize it till its too late! (just like in Walmart's / Kmart/ Ann & Hope case).

I am using this analogy because analogies are an interesting and insightful way to make sense out of the complex constructs. Talking about analogies, Deccan Air's low-pricing is similar to the startegy adopted by Coke in introducing 'Chota Coke'. With Chota Coke, what coke essentially did was this: it made cola more affordable to tea/coffee drinking segment and in the process expanded the market significantly. Or, for that matter, take shampoo packaging. The sachets packing makes it more affordable and hence consumers who wouldn't otherwise use shampoo (so much), end up buying shampoo, and moreover, in a recurring fashion.

All these analogies are put forth to emphasize one point which is more important than any other point in the civil aviation game: 'affordability'. And it is clear by now that what Deccan Air is attempting is to make air-travel more affordable to the masses.

May many Deccan Airs bloom. I, for one, am watching this baby.

I know that adding to the sufferings we have all undergone over the years of occupation does not make us want freedom any less. I appeal to the mothers of this world to raise their voices with mine against the unjust and inhuman expulsions of Palestinians, my two sons and all other sons of mothers like me.

Presents

Voices from Palestine

on 8 September 2003, Monday

at Students' Christian Movement India, Mission Road, Bangalore

5:30 p.m. - Screening of Gaza Strip (a 74 min documentary directed by James Longley)

7 p.m. - Discussion on the current socio-political situation in Palestine with Sam Bahour and Wafa Abdur Rehman from The Palestinian Initiative for Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) in Jerusalem through a web link. Moderator - Dr.Unnikrishnan P.V.

"You have blood on your hands, Mr. Sharon. Indian People do not
welcome you."

Israeli Prime Minister and right-wing Likud party chief whip Ariel Sharon will be in India on 9 September 2003 to help India battle 'terrorism.' Sharon himself stands accused of murders of several thousand Palestinians -as the commander of an Israeli force that massacred refugees in Qibya in 1953; as the Defense Minister in 1982, when Lebanese forces allied to Israel slaughtered hundreds of Palestinian non- combatants in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, a crime for which an Israeli commission found Sharon to bear indirect responsibility. Sharon is in India to finalise a $1 billion arms deal with the BJP led Govt.

"India, the United States and Israel have some fundamental similarities. We are all democracies, sharing a common view of pluralism, tolerance and equal opportunity.." - National Security Advisor, Brajesh Mishra at American Jewish Committee meeting, Washington.

The present BJP led Government's inherent fascist character is coming to light with its alliance with countries like Israel and the United States. In the 'battle against terrorism', there has been blatant persecution of communities - be it Muslims in Gujarat or elsewhere in India or Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. The US battle cry of pre-emptive war to fight terrorism rings loud in Afghanistan, Iraq and other parts of the world.

We invite you to listen to the Palestinian people as they testify against Sharon and the Israeli government and speak of their long resistance against years of persecution. On September 8 through a direct web link, we will question fascism, understand and hear the voices of resistance. The violence faced by the Palestinian people at the hands of the Israeli Government has been drowned in the racket of global media giants. We see this an opportunity to access technology as we stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, to question the Indian Government's alliance with fascist forces like Israel and US and to tell Mr. Sharon that he is not welcomed by the Indian people.

The movement seeks to provoke thought and a genuine spirit of enquiry in the young and provide a solid value based education, which involves the absorption and aesthetics and spirituality in an increasingly technical, mundane and competitive world.

More on Deccan

Continuing on my earlier post about Deccan Air, here's what my friend Rajeev Mahajan (ISTT) has to say on the topic in:

India's first true no-frills airline Air Deccan ( http://www.airdeccan.net )took off on August 25, 2003. What's unique about Air Deccan is that:

1) It connects small towns in South India which till now were not on the aviation map.
2) Offers fares as low as 50% as compared to fares of other airlines and nearly equivalent to the first class fare on the railways.
3) It lobbied actively the Govts. of AP and Karnataka to reduce the sales tax on fares from 25% to 0% and 4% respectively.
4) It got the Govt. of Karnataka as a captive customer - the GoK has issued a directive that to officers who holds the rank of a tahsildar or above, to travel by Air Deccan for official purpose.
5) The airline operates aircraft with a skeleton staff - only one cabin crew and two pilots. Add to this the airline doesn't provide any refreshments on board, if you want a sandwhich during your flight, you got to buy it. This cuts on costs.
6) Operating 48 seater ATR aircrafts cuts on break-even.
7) One of the most significant innovations done by Air Deccan is to emblazon their aircraft with Sun Microsystem's and Java's logo - all of this for a fee that Sun pays Air Deccan. Catalogues and product promotion material on Sun's products is provided during the flight -notice how you would catch a potential customer's attention, especially when a significant proportion of your clientele are going to be software pros, primarily since Air Deccan has Bangalore as its hub. Bhaskar Pramanik, MD of Sun said that this promo campaign fits in well for both the companies as both provide customers with value for money products and services. Such promos can only push down Air Deccan's breakeven, which will be a test-case for no-frills air travel in India, which undoubtedly has great economic benefits. Let's wait and see how things in this industry shape up.

Regards Rajjjj
This logo promotion idea is real neat.

In the Name of the Father

Based on true story, it is about false indiction of an Irish father and his wayward son by British authorities. The incident is the infamous Guilford Pub bombing of 70s. Even though factually incorrect at places (example: in real life, father and son were never in the same cell), its a real touching movie and brings out the point that governments around the world just want scapegoats. The scene invloving inmates lighting papers is especially moving.

Details here. Recommendation: A must watch.
