Feb 24 - Mar 3, 2007: Entrepreneurship Week - India

"
Dear Mr. Jain,

We are writing to let you know that the TiE Bangalore Chapter is a Partner in the first celebration of Entrepreneurship Week India, and to invite you to participate in the activities.

The goal of Entrepreneurship Week India is two-fold: to celebrate the opportunities of India today; and to improve the culture and ecosystem for entrepreneurship in the country.

Entrepreneurs solve problems and build value - whether they are inside companies, starting ventures, in academia or government. To realize the potential of India today, we need more successful entrepreneurs. Working together, we can make this happen.

Entrepreneurship Week focuses our attention on entrepreneurship; engages a broad group of people through awareness campaigns, events and activities; and, by raising appreciation and support, endeavors to improve the culture and climate for entrepreneurship.

We are committed to fostering the entrepreneurial spirit of India, and TiE Bangalore is delighted to be Partner in E Week. We hope that you will join us in making Entrepreneurship Week India a great success.

February 24 to March 3, 2007, Entrepreneurship Week India will energize the entire nation. Together, let's celebrate the spirit of We Can. We Will.

How can you PARTICIPATE?
A first step to creating a winning ecosystem is to start thinking and talking about entrepreneurship; to test and exercise your creativity; and to get more people to care and to join. So participate in the two awareness campaigns being run this week.

  • Take the pledge and help create a Winning Ecosystem in India. Make a promise and commit yourself     to a better future. Each signature will change the course of tomorrow. Read More
  • Enter the one-liner contest and share your thoughts on entrepreneurship with the world. Win for     yourself and win for the nation! Your views spur India's future. Read more

  • Your participation is critical - if we all come together, we can improve the chances of continued strong economic growth in India.

    Who can PARTICIPATE?
As a valued member of the TiE Bangalore community, we encourage you to participate actively in the nationwide excitement that is E Week India.

You can also get your friends, family and anyone else you know to join the celebrations. The more the involvement, the closer we are to a collaborative national success.

We value your involvement and support. So any suggestions you have that will help us participate better in this initiative, please mail them to executivedirector@tiebangalore.org

    Join the CELEBRATIONS, now!
Working together with over 150 academic institutes, non-profit associations, and other corporate E Week Partners, TiE Bangalore is launching Entrepreneurship Week India concurrently with Entrepreneurship Week USA in a truly global effort. E Week India was initiated by NEN, a non-profit helping leading academic institutes in India build world-class entrepreneurship programs.

So, go ahead, log on to www.eweekindia.org and experience the excitement!

We look forward to your participation in Entrepreneurship Week India 2007!

    Warm regards,

Mar 15: Event on VC investing in Internet-based Services and Mobile VASx

Venture Intelligence is organizing Internet & Mobile Connect, a roundtable event on Venture Capital investing in the Internet-based Services and Mobile Value Added Services sectors. The event will be held on March 15 in Mumbai.

The Online Services and Mobile VAS sectors have emerged as favorite sectors among Venture Capitalists accounting for almost 50% of all VC investments in the IT & ITES industry. However, there are several significant challenges facing these sectors – including business models, valuations, quality of management, etc. In this context, leading VC investors and top executives from Online Services and Mobile VAS companies will come together at Venture Intelligence Internet & Mobile Connect to network, discuss and share best practices.

The key themes to be addressed include "Internet Businesses: Is the boom for real this time?", "Mobile VAS: Time to look beyond Ring Tones and Wallpapers?" and "Raising & Leveraging Venture Capital".

The panels at Internet & Mobile Connect feature discussions between investing and operating executives on the following issues:

    • How are these sectors going to shape in the next few years? • What are the business models that have worked in other markets? Will they work in India? • What are some of the India-specific opportunities? • How can investors differentiate the winners from the crowd? • What are the challenges for investors in these sectors? • Where are the exit opportunities?

The first panel consisting of experienced investors and entrepreneurs – including Alok Kejriwal of Contests2win. com, Ashish Gupta of Helion VC, Anurag Dod of Guruji.com and Avnish Bajaj of Matrix Partners -will discuss the opportunities and challenges before the Internet-based businesses in India. The second panel – including Sanjay Swamy of mChek, Sandeep Singhal of Nexus India Capital, Arvind Rao of OnMobile and Rajesh Sawhney of Reliance Entertainment - will discuss what the future holds for the Mobile VAS sector with a special focus on new business models. The final panel – including speakers like Nitish Mittersain of Nazara Tech, Probir Roy of Paymate and Ravi Adusumalli of SAIF Partners - will throw light on what VC investors are looking for from Internet-based Services and Mobile VAS companies and what it takes to be a VC-backed company in these sectors.

The event is targeted at executives from Venture Capital funds, Internet-based Services and Mobile VAS companies planning to raise VC financing, and related service providers. To register for this event, please visit http://tsjmedia.com/ev150307.htm

    Feb24-25: BMC's Kalwarbetta Trek

Bangalore Mountaineering Club (BMC) is organizing a trek to Kalwarbetta Trek during next two days (Feb24-25). It could be for members only, though. Check with them. Details on their website.

An excerpt on Kalwarbetta from their site follows:
"Kalwarbeta, 60 Kms from Bangalore, is one the hill forts amongst the Nandi Hill ranges. The dilapidated walls of Tipu's fort can be found today on steep Kalavara Betta (Skandagiri), near the village of Kalavara History says this was a small but strong hill fort. It surrendered to British troops on 19 October 1791. It remained in British hands until the peace treaty of 1792, which concluded of the third Anglo-Mysore war. This is a tedious trek as the hill is precipitous and high. The trek starts from the Papagni Temple at the foothills of Kalwara village. The fortress of Kalwarbeta is in full sight throughout the walk uphill. This steep and fantastic trek through a maze of dense shrub is highly intriguing. Kalwarbeta is a teaser. Just as you reach the fort wall contended that you have topped the hill, you see another ring of fort. No sooner you reach there; you will find another majestic fort wall waiting to be conquered. There are six such series of stonewalls protecting an abandoned temple on the hilltop. "

    First Agatti, now Kullu!

Aviation boom is leading to (potential) interesting projects. Earlier I posted about integrating the twin islands of Agatti and Kalpati through an extended runway. Now, there is news about extending Kullu airport over a river, and in the process making it the first such airport/runway in the country.

We (Air Deccan) started Kullu-Delhi-Kullu services last year, and its a good route for us. We broke Jagson's monopoly by launching this route. Their flat fare used to be 4600 Rs (total) before we started. I put a starting fare of 1 Rs (basic). Within a week, Jagson had dropped their fare to a total of 1000 Rs!! Oh, the aviation business, dont we all love it! :)

    Aircrafts and Deer!!

Interesting pieces of news of entirely opposite nature!

While two men in Iowa face federal charges for harassing deer with an aircraft for allegedly using powered parachutes to herd the deer toward hunters in Dec 2004 (via AVweb, Feb 15'07), a television news helicopter pilot saved a deer by using his rotor wash to push it across an ice-covered lake in Oklahoma (via AVweb, Jan 22'07).

What the heck? Harassing deer with an aircraft? I mean, come on now!! Whereas Helis save the day while proving Bad+Heli=Good! Hats off to you Matthew for that kick-ass formula!

    Interesting Project @ Agatti airport

There's an interesting news about extension of Agatti airport to the adjacent island Kalpati. The two islands are only 400 m away. Reminds me of Macau airport where the runway is in the ocean, and the taxiway connects it to the airport on the mainland (a nice pic taken from here).

We (Air Deccan) have been studying Agatti as a destination, but traffic doesn't seem too high as of now. But then again, traffic could be an issue because of very-high current fares! Anybody's guess when we'd start flying there. I'm sure gonna be there when we do!!

Still possible to catch some action!

    "Sir / Madam,

Kriyative Theatre Trust, started less than two years ago, has already produced two new plays and given over fifty performances all over the state and outside. Before taking up yet another new production, Kriyative Theatre is conducting a festival of all its present productions at Rangashankara from February 13 to 18, 2007. Except for the opening play, all the other productions being presented at this six-day festival are solo performances directed by Soumya Varma and performed by Laxmi Chandrashekar. While Gajanana Naik has scored the music for all the plays in the festival, Muddanna Rattihalli has designed the lighting.

The festival, which features 5 plays in Kannada and 2 in English, opens with 'Heegadre Hege', a hilarious comedy based on the writings of T.Sunandamma. The play scripted by K.Y.Narayana Swamy, designed and directed by Pramod Shiggaon, has well known theatre and television artistes, Sunder and Laxmi Chandrashekar in the cast.

A solo adaptation of Dr.Chandrasekhara Kambara's novel 'Singarevva mattu Aramane', will be staged in Kannada on the 14 th and in English on the 17th. 'Hennallave' and its English version 'Just A Woman', which saw the 150th show at the Rajbhavan recently will be staged on 15th and 16 th respectively. The final day will see the staging of two short plays - 'Eddelu' and 'Medea', Kannada adaptations of two monologues by Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo and his actress wife, Franca Rame.

..and Parikrama to open for Iron Maiden.

Again, I dont know what happened to winners of Campus Rock Idols, but Parikrama seem to be doing the Opening Act at Iron Maiden's upcoming Bangalore performance on Mar 17!

    "Hello Everyone!

There is some great news for you guys, Parikrama will be opening for IRON MAIDEN (YES, you read it right, for Iron Maiden) on March 17th, 2007 in Bangalore. According to Maiden''s website, the band will be the first to bring in a full massive western style stage production - air freighting in almost 20 tons of backline equipment and their huge stage production for this one show.

Not only that, Parikrama will be playing 11 concerts in 11 cities in 11 days (You read it right, again) starting tomorrow. Since, Mr. Nitin ''The vocalist" Malik has started flying now after a ga…..ap of eight years Parikrama is busy 24 X 7. The band would play in cities like Siliguri, Goa, Ahmedabad, Durgapur, Kolkatta, Dhanbad etc. All in all, the band would cover the entire length and breadth of the country in just 11 days (reminds of Jules Gabriel Verne…uh.).

There are 4 shows lined up with Mr. Saif Ali Khan in the last week of March and the first week of April, and then later on more shows in the month of November.

It’s really nice to see that a rock band, singing in English, is now doing things that even most of the indipop and commercial artistes hardly get to do.

Parikrama is rocking in corporate sector as well, giving a taste of hard rock to well suited and booted (a cliché) Corporate Managers and CEOs. Last year, Parikrama composed a song for MICROSOFT, called "Super Hero" which they played in front of Mr. Bill Gates. Last week, Parikrama was invited by IBM to compose a song for them called "We are Special"

Parikrama says “We are really proud for the entire rock industry as, we are initiating these new things and breaking barriers. We are doing things that probably only a few, very established commercial artistes are able to"

    I SAY CHEERS TO THAT...
    LONG LIVE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL,

    Anuj Sharma
    Parikrama Inc."

Feb 15: Networking Dinner Meeting on SOA and Software Licensing

    Dear Mr. Jain

Please mark your calendar and register for an exciting TiE Networking Dinner Meeting on Thrusday 15th February 2007

TiE Bangalore Chapter is happy to announce a talk by

    Palle M. Pederson
Chief Technology Officer at Black Duck Software
    on
" SOA and Software Licensing "
    About the Topic:

SOA and Software Licensing: What Developers Need to Know about Application Boundaries

The open source community is debating the meaning of software licensing in the brave new world of service-oriented architectures (SOA). In an SOA environment, one application accesses another application's functionality, using it to perform a specific function. As a result, application boundaries are anything but clear.

Those following the debates within the Free Software Foundation about GPLv3, due out in early 2007, know that a primary issue for the organization is implications of application-to-application interactions for programs governed by the GPL.

The session will be led by Palle Pederson, Chief Technology Officer at Black Duck Software, an expert in the relationship between open source application development and software licensing.

    Palle will discuss:

  • How service oriented architectures present new software licensing quandaries;
  • How open source developers can avoid these quandaries;
  • What the quandaries mean broadly for the software licensing debate;
  • How the Free Software Foundation and others are acting to alleviate the issue

  • About the Speaker:

Palle Pedersen brings more than 20 years of high tech and entrepreneurial experience to Black Duck Software. He has developed a technical expertise in building innovative systems and processes that efficiently hold, manage, process and deliver large-scale electronic data sets. In addition, Mr. Pedersen has a strong background in object-oriented and optimizing compiler technology and has worked with Open Source Software for more than 10 years.

Mr. Pedersen started as an entrepreneur by creating a repair shop for radios, TVs, and computers at the age of 12, and holds a graduate degree in Electronics Engineering from Danish Technical University, where he graduated top of class.

Feb 21-25: Bring Your Own Film Festival @ Puri

    "Dear Folks,

The countdown has begun. BYOFF 07, the 4th edition is just a few days away.

    Remember the dates?
21st to 25th of February on the beaches of Puri.

A HUGE thanks to all of you for the overwhelming response that we have received this year. Submissions are still pouring in.

We have been receiving queries whether we will close our registration for films after the 10th of February as stated earlier. But as you know that's not BYOFF spirit. We would therefore like to clarify that a last date was mentioned only to bring some amount of sanity into the whole organization of the festival. We would try our best to even accomodate a filmmaker arriving with his film on the eleventh hour, however, if we get the registrations earlier it will help us to include details in the souvenir.

So those of you who think that it's now too late to send in your film, we would ask you to please register your film as soon as possible. Please send details, synopsis and stills and a pic each of the respective directors as we are going to the press with the souvenir on the 14th. of this month. If you have already registered, please ignore this mail.

Those of you who have already registered, thanks once again. Please do let us know your travel plans so as to appoint volunteers to guide you upon your arrival.
So folks, it's time almost to start packing your bags.

From all of us in THE BYOFF TEAM

    Cheers!
    and

Feb 9-12: Third TriContinental Film Festival 2007

Last year this festival had taken place during Jan29-31. Post on that here.

"THIRD TRI CONTINENTAL FILM FESTIVAL – INDIA 2007

    Venue: Alliance Francaise de Bangalore

    Dear Sir/Madam,

We are happy to invite you to the third Tricontinental film festival Human Rights in Frames Feb.9 to12th 2007.

    Time: Friday, 9th Feb.2007: 2 pm to 8 pm,
Saturday 10th Feb: 11 am to 8 pm,
    Sunday,11th Feb. 11 am, to 8pm,
    Monday,12th Feb. 2 pm to 8pm.

The TRI Continental Film Festival was conceived in 2002 by a group of Latin American filmmakers, the Movimiento de Documentalistas, as an arts and cultural initiative that seeks to use the medium of film to explore linkages between social struggles and respect for human rights norms and practices. With the aim to showcase human rights cinema from the three continents that form part of the global South, the festival has become an annual event in Latin America, Africa,
where it is hosted by Uhuru Productions, and Asia. Breakthrough, with its emphasis on popular culture and media as tools for transformation and mainstreaming human rights concerns, has been hosting and organizing the TRI Continental Film Festival's Asian leg in India every year since 2004, to wide critical and popular acclaim. The 2007 festival has received over 100 entries, and of these 24 films will be screened. 2007 will also see newer themes explored in the festival such as the alienation faced by call centre workers, the politics of toilets, the war on terror, children in conflict situations, gay and transgender people gazing and being gazed at through the lens, the lives of revolutionary women, the plight of undocumented immigrants and the rights of indigenous communities. Most of the films screened will be either Asia or India premieres, thus bringing an otherwise inaccessible brand of cinema to this part of the world.

While the cultures of militarism and greed seek to dominate our politico-economic landscape, the TRI Continental Film Festival challenges filmmakers of the global South and those committed to telling stories from embattled communities in the Americas, Africa and Asia to present us with alternative windows to a different kind
of world. It is committed to promoting a human rights culture in India that respects the equal rights of all regardless of religion, gender, class, caste, sexual orientation, age and disability.

For the list and synopsis of films screened:-

    1) Siliguri hosted a model aircraft show on Jan 21.
    2) All India Aeromodeller's Meet 2007 organized by of Wings India happened at Madh Island, Mumbai during 2-4 Feb. [Just couldn't post info in time due to other pressing engagements.] Details here.

    Looks like its all happening!
