'Dear friend, Once again World Tibet Day is approaching. As you are aware, July 6, the birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama is observed as World Tibet Day by Tibetans and their supporters worldwide.
Founded in 1998 by Richard Rosenkranz, a Pulitzer Prize nominee in history, World Tibet Day was created with three main goals: first to create an annual worldwide event to help restore essential freedoms for those living in Chinese-occupied Tibet; second to increase awareness of the genocidal threats to the Tibetan people; and third, to celebrate the unique beauty and value of Tibetan culture and thought. World Tibet Day has grown into one of the most important events on the Tibetan calendar. The event is held on July 6 . birthday of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama.
2008 is particularly important to all of us. Like never before, the Tibetans have started their revolt against the brutal Chinese regime, whose repressive actions resulted in the deaths of more than 200 Tibetans this year, and even more significantly, which have resulted in the deaths of over one 1.2 million Tibetans since the Chinese invasion began in 1950. The Chinese government continues to suppress those who dare to express their opinions. We believe that
World Tibet Day is an opportunity for those who live in free countries to show their solidarity with the six million Tibetans living under military rule.
We are asking you and/or your organisation to join us in observing July 6 (Sunday) as World Tibet Day in your locality/country. Please send us a small note at: info@worldtibetday. org on what you plan to do on this day.
Please go to our website (www.worldtibetday. org) for helpful ideas on staging the event, and for a Message on WTD from HH the Dalai Lama. Thank you.

"pedestrian pictures in association with Lankesh Prashashti invites you to the screening of
TINGYA dir. Mangesh Hadawale (2007/122 mins/Marathi with English subtitles)
Date: June 28, 2008, Saturday
Venue: IAT, Queen's Road, Bangalore (Directions to the venue) Time: 5 pm-7.30 pm
The screening will be followed by a discussion on the current agricultural crisis faced by farmers in the State. ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- - Awards: Tingya has a long list of awards to its name including 9 awards at the 2008 Maharashtra State Government Awards; Fipresci International Critics Award for Director and the Best Film Award at MAMI International Film Festival 2008 (Mumbai); Best Debutant Director award, Lankesh Prashashti National Awards 2008 (Bangalore); five nominations at the 2007 Indian Panorama – to name only a few.
Synopsis: Tingya is the son of Karbhari, a farmer who cultivates potatoes in Maharashtrian village. The film provides an intimate description of the conditions that plague Karbhari's debt ridden existence while placing this against a sensitive portrayal of the relationship between Tingya and Chitangya (an oxen born two months after Tingya). Tingya cannot understand why the family must decide on selling the oxen to a slaughterhouse while it is keen on protecting and nurturing an aged grandmother who doesn't contribute to the family's income.
Context: The film is being screened in Bangalore at a time when Karnataka is in the middle of a worsening agricultural crisis. The first 20 days of June has seen 18 farmers commit suicide in the State, not including the police firing in Haveri killing one farmer on June 10. Beyond the rhetoric of blaming the Central UPA Government, our newly formed BJP government has little to show in terms of an action taken report. We are not crediting as actions taken the compensation money doled out nor the sanction of a statue honouring the farmer who was shot down in Haveri. The discussions obviously need to go deeper if we are to even understand the crises faced by the debt-ridden farmer in today's economy. We hope a sensitive film such as Tingya will set the pace for this discussion.

'WEDDING ALBUM' is Girish Karnad's latest play. It is a wonderful, comic drama in English, that is modern, relevant and revelatory about the India that we live in today. The play is a first of sorts, even for him, for it is his first full length contemporary play.
The play will be produced and directed by Lilette Dubey and will have a top notch cast from the Mumbai stage including old regulars like Joy Sengupta, Suchitra Pillai, Zafar Karachiwala, Jayati Bhatia, Deepika Deshpande, Ira Dubey and others, and the best possible technical crew.
Synopsis
Traditionally the girl used to marry a boy from the neighbouring village. In the globalized village, the ‘neighbourhood’ can be any corner of the earth. In the past, the bridal couple often saw each other for the first time on the wedding podium. Today a million emails, SMS’s, phonecalls, tapes and scanned images introduce them to each other. Yet one element of the plot remains unchanged: the couple agrees to enter an unknown, uncharted territory--- each other.
The play, Wedding Album, deals with a normal urban middle- class family: a daughter who lives abroad with her professional husband, a brother who is a software designer, a younger daughter happy enough to marry a suitable boy from the US she has never met, and then, of course, there is the doting mother and the loyal cook. A family, which is educated, liberal, modern. Yet each snapshot shows its members frozen in a technological, globalized projection of respectability but each figure has a double image, with a penumbra of a hidden life. It’s a hilarious spectacle. And hopefully, moving !!!

"The students of Bangalore School of Speech and Drama will be performing Aladdin at Chowdiah Memorial Hall on June 27th and 28th 2008 at 7:00 PM What makes this production unique is that it is not the familiar Disney version, rather a retelling of the original Chinese folktale in the form of a hilarious pantomime. Thrown in for good measure is some foot-tapping music and dance. You just might be enthralled by the power-packed performances of the children aged 5-19 years.
So do come in with family and friends for what promises to be an unforgettable evening.

Jun 22: Protesting against privatization of Bangalore lakes
"Dear All,
Join us in forming a Human Chain around the Agara Lake (Kormangala) on 22nd June (Sunday) at 11.00 am. This is part of the campaign, which concerned individuals, organizations, communities have undertaken to protest and stop the on-going privatisation of lakes. Your presence will make a difference to the movement of saving public commons, and especially the conservation of tanks, which we owe to our future generations.
Bring along your kids, neighbors and friends. Pls pass this on to as many people as you can.
Regards Deepak Arya
Brief Note on the issue The Lake Development Authority plans to 'develop' lakes in Bangalore, by handing it over to private parties. Already, four prime water bodies - Agara Lake, Hebbal Lake, Vengaiah Kere and Nagawara Lakes have been leased out to commerical entities for a period of 15 years.
There is deep concern over the ongoing provatisation as such development involves introduction of restaurants, kiosks, boating, water sports, jetty etc, as it has already been seen in the case of the Nagawara Lake by Lumbini Gardens Pvt Ltd, and by M/s Par C Systems in the case of Vengaih Kere. We are deeply distressed by this development as we find this unethical and counter to the objective of environment conservation and maintenance of lakes as our public commons. The kind of activities that have been allowed distance visitors from nature, and feed into a consumerist culture that we could well do without.
Incidentally, these lakes were comprehensively de-silted, restored and rehabilitated by grants from the Norwegian Government under the Indo-Norwegian Project and the National Lake Conservation Programme of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. As a result these lakes are fantastic water bodies and excellent habitats for birds - both migrating and local. In addition they support a wide diversity of flora and fauna, and support the livelihoods of tens of fishing families.
Over time, these lakes have been intensively used by all local residents and the general public for various purposes. While Agara is being used for walking, jogging and recreational purposes, Hebbal Lake has been used for customary and traditional occupations like fishing, grazing and irrigation. In addition, birdwatchers have been visiting these wetland habitats regularly documenting the excellent diversity of migratroy waterfowl. All these lakes, and Hebbal in particular, have been the subject of numerous scholars and researchers studying wetlands, birds, aquatic life and so on. Hebbal Lake has infact been repeatedly proposed for conservation as a bird refuge, and its watershed as a Regional Park (per the Lakshman Rau Committee Report 1988).
These water bodies are also critical open spaces for children of surrounding neighbourhoods whose sensibilities towards nature and its dynamics are also awakened by the easy access to such open spaces.
We sincerely believe that it is an unnecessary and damaging investment to now lease out these very lakes for advancing commercial interests. Besides being illegal this will take away our public commons and our natural heritage and will only benefit a few commercial entities. This loss will be dear and felt by present and future generations.
Keeping all this in view, we urge the Hon'ble High Court of Karnataka-- which is hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by Environment Support Group (ESG) against privatisation of lakes-- that the programme of lake privatization must be abandoned. We strongly feel that lakes must be maintained as our common heritage, their maintenance undertaken with the cooperation of local communities and no activity inconsistent with the traditional and specific use of the water bodies should be allowed now or in the future.
As concerned individuals, we are keen to assist the Government of Karnataka and its agencies in any intervention that will ensure the protection and sustenance of our lakes systems.
Do join us in a symbolic event to be held on 22nd June 2008 at Agara Lake, Kormangala. Through the Human Chain we will symbolically express that we want to preserve and conserve our lakes for the current and the future generations. . Jun 20-22: BFS Presents 'All We Need Is Love' Screenings
"You say "potato," I say "patattah" You say "tomato", I say "creole tomata"
- `Let's call This Whole Thing Off' George and Ira Gershwin
He forgets to run his fingers through his hair which he does as a habit every once a minute. She closes her copy of `Kala Ghoda Poems' forgetting where she was last and to slide in the bookmark. The bookmark slips from between the pages and floats onto the tarmac. He walks towards her and she towards him. In complete silence.
An ugly silver colored sedan runs over the bookmark with its surly bullying wheels. It honks with rabid dog vulgarity and other cars like so many dogs, reciprocate. This time of the night the city is all neon and noise. People talking, hollering, laughing, screaming. Stock Market, Cricket, Some joke you didn't hear. Stereos blare. Helter Skelter, Shout Shout (Let it All Out). Someone says aloud, "The Godforsaken Traffic" and honks three times in a row. Crackers explode. Someone just won a match. A wedding band joins in and kicks up a brass version of "Onde Ondu Sari".
He walks towards her and she towards him. In complete silence. In the middle of a teeming screaming city. He towards her and she towards him. In complete ignorance. In the middle of a strange city, as unfamiliar to them as they are to each other. Yet they come closer. Maybe they speak in different tongues. Maybe he likes Dylan, she likes Asha Bhonsle. Maybe all they have in common is the silence. In the middle of a teeming screaming city.
The beat that the heart skipped. That minute when the eyes forgot to blink. Complete Silence.
They meet each other at the exact centre.
And the band begins to play that ol' Kishore hit,".... aur Punjabi Main Kehte Hain…."
Bangalore Film Society completely endorses what The Beatles had in mind when they said `All We Need is Love' and is proud to present three intimate stories of love unspoken, deep and cathartic.
Friday 20th June, 2008 Time: 6.30pm
A Year of the Quiet Sun (1984/106min) Dir: Krzysztof Zanussi A Year of the Quiet Sun, regarded as Polish master Zanussi's greatest and most powerful work is a tender tragic love story set in a small German town now reeling under the post World War II upheaval. The movie chronicles the awkward courtship between a disillusioned American soldier posted in the town and a native woman who has been deeply stricken by the war. Language is no barrier for their love but much as they try the past, the dead landscape and their responsibilities will take their toll and remind them of the space between. Winner of the Gold Lion at Venice 84'. (KINDLY NOTE THAT THE FILM ON SATURDAY WILL BEGIN AT 6.45pm DUE TO UNAVOIDABLE CIRCUMSTANCES)
Saturday 21st June, 2008 Time: 6.45pm
Last Life in the Universe (2003/109min) Dir: Pen Ek-Ratanaruang
Directed with relentlessly inventive virtuosity by Director Ratanaruang and lensed in ethereal shades of white and blue by ace cinematographer Christopher Doyle, `Last Life in the Universe' is a hip and beguiling movie about love, death and redemption. Inspired by the hypnotic dimensions of M.C. Escher's work, Ratanaruang plays out a tragic-comedy about lost souls trying to connect in sterile world where violence and the past is always around the corner and where the only hope and redemption is in intimacy and connection. Featuring a quietly powerful performance by Japanese star Tadanobu Asano and an electric cameo by cult film director Takashi Miike, `Last Life in the Universe' was awarded the Upstream Prize at Venice 2003.
Saturday 21st June, 2008 Time: 6.30pm
The Girl on the Bridge (1999/90min) Dir: Patrice Leconte
Adele (played by the striking Vanessa Paradis) jumps off the bridge into the River Seine. Time did not bid her well and left her alone and miserable. But she is rescued just in time by Gabor (a fantastic Daniel Auteuil) who is looking for a new assistant for his knife throwing act. Director Patrice Leconte takes a by-the-two-penny torrid love story and turns it into an exotic mysterious tale of passionate love and intimate connections. Jean-Marie Drejou`s remarkable black and white frames lend an old world carnival atmosphere and Director Leconte infuses wit and eccentricity to the passion play bringing the film its strange joie de vivre. On May 31 (Sat) and Jun 1 (Sun), Claire Denieul, a theatre practitioner from France stages August Strindberg's "The Stronger" at 9:30 PM. Be tuned to announcements of a few more "Other Voices" shows in June. Just to recap, the "Other Voices" program introduced in Ranga Shankara's Fest '07 brings theatre into an intimate performing space and an audience of not more than 25. Revathi Menon and Rehaan Engineer performed during Fest '07 that gave the "Other Voices" program a solid start. Tickets for the "Other Voices" shows are available 30 minutes before the show at Ranga Shankara and the duration of the show is less than 30 minutes. Praise for "The Stronger" Strindberg creates an episode of incredible, poetic power – a snapshot of life so intense, so powerful, that it rivals Beckett at his best. Like a Kafka short story, "The Stronger" is rich in allegory and lends itself to many layers of interpretation. One can easily spend hours thinking about it after the show ends. It is moreover, a powerful play, one that makes a deep impression, and leaves one with the illusion that one has travelled far and seen much, even though the entire thing is actually incredibly short. See you at RS then!-- Theatre Alive!
