Some Events

#1 Freedom Jam 2005
Registration for the FREEDOM JAM ON Aug 14 OPEN NOW. CLICK TO REGISTER.

#2 National Puzzle Championship
We are happy to inform you that the 2005 National Puzzle Championship will be held on Sunday 28 August 2005. You'll find more details about the NPC at http://npc.quixy.in. NPC 2005 is back. Please forward it the people whose do you think are interested in puzzles.

Regards, Rajesh
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Please note that this year prior qualification will be required as the number of participants will be strictly limited. Top scorers from previous championships qualify by default, while others can use the NPC Qualification Test on 20-21 August 2005 to secure their chance to participate in the NPC. Participants will have 30 hours to work on a set of puzzles. For more details about the qualification test, see http://npc.quixy.in/qt/.

Note also that a new registration system is under development, which should open on 8 August 2005. However, you can already express your interest by recording your e-mail address using the form on the QID registration page (http://qid.quixy.in). This may not be the most appealing way to handle this, but our priority was to get the news out as soon as possible. We still hope you appreciate the efforts we put into assembling a competitive national team for the forthcoming World Puzzle Championship in Hungary (8-13 October). We would like to involve many more people in puzzling and we therefore organize a National Puzzle Week from Monday 29 August till Sunday 4 September 2005. We would like you to invite as many people as possible to participate. The NPW is not a competition as such, but more an opportunity for people to try different types of puzzles at various levels. The NPW offers seven challenges with accompanying tutorials to make sure that everyone can get started. The first challenge and tutorial is now available for download. For more information about NPW, see http://npw.quixy.in.

Help to spread the news. If each of you forwards this message to one or more friends, we should be able to reach thousands of potential participants. The number of people who are dedicated enough to prepare for the NPC may be limited, but no one should have an excuse to not at least try to solve one of the NPW puzzles !

Kind regards, Team India

#3 Prasthutha: 2nd August, India's Emergence as a Global Power : It'sDrives and Consequences," a talk by Mr. S. Gurumurthy
Prasthutha - Relevant Thoughts for Responsible People, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, Invites you for a lecture on "India's Emergence as a Global Power : It's Drives and Consequences" By Sri. S Gurumurthy (Columnist, The Indian Express)

Venue : Satish Dawan(CSIC) Auditorium Date : Tuesday, 2nd August 2005 Time : 4.00 p.m. (Please note the unususal timing) Tea : 3.45 p.m.

E-mail: prasthu@tejas.serc.iisc.ernet.in Web: http://tejas.serc.iisc.ernet.in/~prasthu/
----------------------------------------
After centuries of colonial rule and a faulty education system, that was continued even after independence, which left India high and dry in economy, values and self pride, the progress made by India towards becoming a global power after about 58 years of independence is not an ordinary one, especially keeping in mind that we had to cope up with a host of stumbling block immediately after independence. More recently, after the fall of Soviet Union and the decline of socialism, capitalism took over the world trade, aggressively pushing for globalisation^E

On another note, ever since Pokhran blasts were conducted, India has vastly improved its political status at the global level. This can be seen by the approach of various nations towards India in the recent past. Various experts are of the opinion that India is a major emerging economy.

In the present unipolar world, what policies should India adopt?
What are the forces that are driving India's rise: is it the human resources, technological advances^E or is it the strength of our civilization?
Is emergence as a global power all about economy?
How will our neighbors react to India emerging as a global power?
How will the other existing powers react?
Listen to Sri. S Gurumurthy to learn about the above questions and more at the Satish Dhawan Auditorium (CSIC) on 2nd August.

About the speaker:
Sri. S Gurumurthy is the founder and trustee of 'Center for Policy Studies', Chennai, India. He is also the all India co-convener of Swadeshi Jagaran Manch. Sri. Gurumurthy was an economic advisor to the last NDA government. A leading Chartered Accountant by profession, Mr. S. Gurumurthy is a consultant to several top business groups in India. He has been the chief advisor to Mr. Ramnath Goenka, founder of Indian Express group. He is also widely acclaimed for investigative journalism; he was instrumental in the uncovering of the 'Bofors' scam.

Regards

Prasthutha

SimpliSmile Happy Hours: Fly at Real Low Fares.

Here's something I thought I should share with you. Please look at the image below which is self-explanatory.

Essentially you can book (limited seats of course) during 2100-0000 hrs everyday for next day travel at steeply discounted fares (I assure you of real low fares.)!! As of now, this scheme is for airbus sectors (metro routes such as Bangalore-Delhi etc). Information on this promotion has not been released in mass media yet and most probably it wont be. Air Deccan is promoting this scheme through limited channels.

So please take advantage of the scheme by booking your tickets at www.airdeccan.net

Thoda Peeche Mudkar Dekhe...
Got it as a forward!

"When gulli-danda and kanche (marbles) were more
popular than cricket ...

When we always had friends to play aais-paais (I Spy),
chhepan-chhepai and pitthoo anytime ...
When we desperately waited for 'yeh jo hai jindagi'..

When chitrahaar, vikram-baitaal, dada daadi ki
kahaniyaan were so fulfilling ...
When there was just one tv in every five houses and
When bisleris were not sold in the trains and we were
worrying if papas will get back into the train in time
or not when they were getting down at stations to fill
up the water bottle ...

When we were going to bed by 9.00pm sharp except for
the 'yeh jo hai jindagi' day ...
When Holis & Diwalis meant mostly hand-made pakwaans and
sweets and moms seeking our help while preparing them...

When Maths teachers were not worried of our mummys and
papas while slapping/beating us ...
When we were exchanging comics and stamps and
chacha-chaudaris and billus were our heroes ...

When we were in nanihaals every summer and loved
flying kites and plucking and eating unripe mangoes
and leechis ...

When one movie every Sunday evening on television was
more than asked for and 'ek do teen chaar' and
'Rajni' inspired us ...

When 50 paisa meant at least 10 toffees ...
When left over pages of the last years notebooks were
used for rough work or even fair work ...

When 'chelpark' and 'natraaj' were encouraged against
'reynolds and family' ...

When the first rain meant getting drenched and playing
in water and mud and making 'kaagaj ki kashtis' ...

When there were no phones to tell friends that we will
be at their homes at six in the evening ...

When our parents always had 15 paise blue colored
'antardesis' and 5 paise machli wale stamps at home...

When we remembered tens of jokes and were not finding
'ice-cream and papa' type jokes foolish enough to stop
us from laughing ...
When we were not seeing patakhes on Diwalis and
gulaals on Holis as air and noise polluting or
allergic agents ...

the list can be endless ...

on the serious note I would like to summarise with ...

When we were using our hearts more than our brains,
even for scientifically brainy activities like
'thinking' and 'deciding' ...
When we were crying and laughing more often, more
openly and more sincerily ...
When we were enjoying our present more than worrying
about our future ...

When being emotional was not synonymous to being weak...

When sharing worries and happinesses didnt mean
getting vulnerable to the listener ...

When blacks and whites were the favourite colors
instead of greys ...

When journeys also were important and not just the
destinations ...

When life was a passenger's sleeper giving enough time
and opportunity to enjoy the sceneries from its open
and transparent glass windows instead of some
superfast's second ac with its curtained, closed and
dark windows ...

I really miss .. do u? "

Whole Lotta Surfin' Goin On!

# Amidst all the controversy of adult MMS floating around, I recieved my first MMS ever yesterday. You see, I have a rather old phone which doesn't have any MMS capabilities. So what I actually recieved was an SMS from Hutch giving me a web link to the message and a key to view my MMS! I logged in to see who'd send me my first MMS, and, anti-climactically saw a pretty regular text-only SMS announcing the arrival of a friend yesterday! My faith in my SMS-only phone restored.
# My online AOPA membership is finally working!
# This accident in March bears strikingly similar resemblance to the recent Cessna crash at Bangalore. Reason of crash in both cases: Fuel-Starvation.
# The Economist pokes the google (stock) balloon by saying it could be yet another internet stock bubble (via /. Also check real funny comment: #13144643 ).
# Technology Review on Krishna Ella of Bharat Infotech: "When Krishna Ella and his wife, Suchitra, arrived in India in 1996,  he had only a dream and $1,000,000 in his pockets... While evam indrajit on one hand traces the story of four friends and their trials and travails from when they are 18 to when they are 35 living in urban middle class India, on the other hand it also traces the struggle of a writer who wants to put into write a play about these four friends. Through the story of these friends the play projects all the prevalent attitudes, vague feelings and undefined frustrations gnawing the hearts of the educated urban middle class. Whether to be a part of the crowd or to single out and voice one's opinion? Are our thoughts our own? Or do they just mirror those of countless others? Who's corrupt? He? She? How about 'Me'?

On our alumni group, in response to this:
#.# "avinash wrote: Salary & Govt. Concessions for a Member of parliament (MP)
TOTAL expense for a MP per year : 32,00,000 For 534 MPs, the expense for 5 years : 8,54,40,00,000 (nearly 855 cores) And they are elected by THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, by the largest democratic process in the world, not intruded into the parliament on their own or by any qualification. This is how all our tax money is been swallowed and price hike on our regular commodities....... Think o! f the great democracy we have............."

This neat deliberation from a senior alumnus:
#.# "Are we all not alike ? Why single out politician only. There are large number of govt. servants who take so much money as their salary without doing duties assigned to them. There are Industrialists who take money from govt., from public banks for some project , take tax benefits also but still so many times such projects never see face of the day. All come from revenue generated by govt, from people of India. Industrial houses open schools and academic Institutions and other Institutions and for this they get costly land at cheap rate because they give illusion that this is for betterment of large section of society but later these Institutions become shops to earn money for them.

Mans of us, technocrats will be taking salary in govt. sector without doing much. Dont we fall under same category as politicians?

Engineering colleges, Medical colleges dont utilize money from tax payers? Are teachers at these colleges indulged in giving quality education with full devotion for which these Institutions were established? Are we as students seriusly study at these Institutions where everything is subsidised and people of India pay tax to run such Institutions?

Ideally it was decided that rural India lack medical facility and fresh medical gradute should work atleast two years at PHC in rural area. Who is ready?

If govt. decides that no fresh graduate engineer will be be allowed to go abroad without paying 5 lac Rs, how much of us will happliy be accepting such policy?

How many software engineers were happy and agree with Wipro chief Premji when he offered his opinion last year that govt. should take more tax from people working in software field because comparatively they are earning more and in lieu software Industries should be given more relaxation in taxes.

A B.Tech.+ MBA gets job in MNC which is establishing a soft drink manufacturing unit in a village in India and our BTMBA fellow has to do everything. Plant is installed. One litre of soft drink concentrate demands 20 litres of simple water and for this Co dril the earth and takes out potable water. In one year , there is shortage of water in surrounding and farmers cry foul. What will co do and what will that BTMBA do? Co was supposed to recycle water but instead they used fresh potable water in the manufacturing of soft drink. Every thing was done by Indian manager because he was only interested in his fat salary. He was certainly knowing what was happening and villagers were ignorant. Laws are there to protect natural resources but who cares. Every law can be manipulated with money. Same MNC cant dare to do same in west but here they have managers who can do anything. Who is culprit ? Even if we know these facts we will be doing job in same Co and will seek promotion etc by removing hurdles coming on the way of Co's production. We will allure villagers, we may give bribe to their leaders so that they dont make noise. Because first we have to establish ourselves, then our family and later Country and society comes. and everybody is doing same then why complains are there? Few nations demands organs of animals and sometimes precious animals are killed who are becoming extinct and who is killing them for sake of money- we Indians. We kill rare animals also. Virtaully we kill anything and everything and sell that to foreigners. If foreigners( including NRIs) need human organs then we have some Indian merchants available for this. If some big pharma MNC wants to do direct human testing for their yet unregistered medicine , we have merchants in the form of doctors who will give those unregistered medicines as sample to ignorant patient and poor patient is happy that he got medicine freely.

These are the realities. We see coruption in every field of life around us and we ignore that and sometimes we are also part of corruption. we are corrupt so we dont worry while selecting corrupt politicians. Politicians are not coming from moon. They are our relatives. When seed is bad then crop cant be good its simple fact. Nobody wants tension in life. Who will welcome a Bhagat Singh or Gandhi in their own family? Because they are bound to create tension in your life first before they keep eye outside of home. Corruption does not bother us. Just one or two day before, advice was given on this forum that harcourtian should send photo copy of his passport, letter of authority aalong with some money if he wants smooth delivery of degree. we may take it lightly and in humour but then everybody is doing this. If politician is also doing same then whom to blame? We are so big nation with huge population that if we all start spiting in a well then it will be filled with our saliva after sometime. Its good to write such mails and forwarding it to counless Indians. We Indians, atleast those who have Computer and Internet facility, have been doing daily such sweet activities where someone send some facts which make us emotionally honest for some time and we forward it to several others. Be it mail about martyrs of Kargil or some facts about ancient India. Some are so generous that now a days we all get mails with title " dont ignore this mail". They are always belonging to some wish mail, devoted to some deity or some god person. Mails dont end with good wishes only there is always a threat also that if you dont do this you will get curse. This is sheer emotional blackmailing but we all are spreading this disease all around. Hopefully everybody thinks that ok whats harm if I forward it atleast I wont be harmed by curse. Nobody sends it to get good wish but to spare him from curse because he is not allowed to break the chain. Its not easy to get elected. Politicians allure us and we give them vote. Its hard work on their part. We may not needing a particular person in parliament and he is not going to make any difference but we select him for several other reasons. He may belong to our cast, he may belong to our region. he may be friend or relative of our known fellow or simply he may be having some favour to us in some of our work ( which can be morally illegal at times). Did not lower middle class Indians buy vacuum cleaners 15 years ago when very few were having carpet at home, let alone wall to wall carpet. Co, inserted the fact in our mind that its status symbol to keep vacuum cleaner so people bought it later it was kept back in to the box again because there was no use of it. Co's marketing people allured us and we selected option to buy vacuum cleaner. Same way politicians allure us and we select them though their job is just opposite to vacuum cleaner. They spread dirt but we all are also contributing in this dirt spreading fashion in some way or other.

Every body wants big package and we expect our MPs MLAs to work with small amount of money because in our eyes they are not doing anything.

Atleast educated like technocrats may ask and discuss in relatively defined manner. Who is doing something for country? Are we doing ? Average Indian is honest ? Are we honest ?"

Dear all:

Its been almost a year now that we started (May 16th, 2003) this egroup and today we have reached a "mini-milestone" with the 500th member coming on-board! The distinction of being the 500th member goes to Aadamvir Singh, who according to his details, is currently doing a PhD in Paint Technology.

To update you more on the group, there are another 85 pending members (who have expressed intention to subscribe but not sent in their details yet!). Further, over the time, some people have left the group, out of whom some re-joined, others didn't. So the current strength of 500 doesn't really reflect the actual number of people who have been a part of this alumni network so far.

Lets hope that the next 500 are reached in a shorter span of time!

Best wishes,

Potpourri: Customer Relations and Corporate Weasel Words

1) A LESSON FOR ALL EMPLOYEES WHO WORK WITH RUDE CUSTOMERS!!!

"Indeed, an award should go to the Virgin Airlines gate attendant in Sydney some months ago for being customer focused, while making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo.

A crowded Virgin flight was cancelled after Virgin's 767s had been withdrawn from service. A single attendant was re-booking a Long line of inconvenienced travellers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, I HAVE to be on this flight and it HAS to be NOW". The attendant replied, "I'm sorry sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these people first, and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out." The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?" Without hesitating, the attendant smiled and grabbed her public address microphone:

May I have your attention please, may I have your attention please," she began - her voice heard clearly throughout the terminal. We have a passenger here at Gate14 WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to Gate 14."

With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the Virgin attendant, gritted his teeth and said, "****@@!!!!!! You!"

Without flinching, she smiled and said, "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to get in line for that too."

2) A few buzzing-to-the-hilt phrases/words from here:

Situated pedagogy 'I think that this means that how you teach depends a bit on where you teach. ' (From Dr Catherine Scott)

Time Poor 'This from,Gardening Australia magazine, June 2005, "People these days are time poor..." The article was referring to selling your house and recommended that the garden was immaculate, for the potential purchaser's satisfaction.

Geo immobilised ' This morning on ABC 702, during a discussion about nuclear energy, a Greens MP (Ian Cohen?) used the term "Geo Immobilised" when describing the disposal of nuclear waste. What I think he meant to say was they bury it!' [from Murray Whitlocke-Jones] Does anyone have another interpretation? Email us if you do.

Time budget: 'As in "Sorry I over extended my time budget this morning, it was my wifes birthday". No, he was late!

Thoughtshower: 'Brainstorming is itself bad enough (and was apparently banned by the BBC because it was deemed offensive to those suffering from epilepsy), but 'Thoughtshower' is abominable. This site also explains a variant of brainstorming, in 'blamestorming' (where colleagues publicly denounce one another).

Opinionnaire ' I just received an email from the university I am studying at with an attached "opinionnaire". A new word to me, but I presume that this is some kind of questionnaire that is seeking my opinions - undoubtedly an exciting new form of stakeholder consultation!' [from Ben Lawson]

Upward bullying 'Staff picking on managers' [from Alasdair Baird]

Performance Manage Out 'Not happy with an employee? You don't sack, can, dismiss or fire them. You "performance manage them out of the enterprise".' [From Jamie Wodetzki]

Interlock 'A favourite word among project mangers at IBM is "interlock", which I think means "talk to" or "coordinate with". As in: "I will interlock with my wife to see if I can come to dinner tomorrow night"'. [From Arne Lindquist]

Unpack As in: "We need to unpack the issue". I think this comes from an old computer term where a number would be stored in packed format internally and would have to be unpacked to be humanly readable.[From Arne Lindquist]

Visual integrity ' As in: visual integrity of the river landscape. Does this mean - if it looks like a river it must be a river? Or maybe it implies you should be able to trust how it looks? I'm still working this one out! [From Reb]rex$U
