"Yes... he went to the mountains a few years ago after job quatted, we're still waiting for him to come back", answeres Kamal. "But...", said Oprah, wiping away one tear drop from her left eye, "How long can you wait for him to come back?" "As long as it takes him, Oprah", said Kamal, Oprah is an about-to-burst dam. The entire studio audience is an over filled water balloon about to explode. "Such commitment.. .", she starts, Kamal cuts her off, "Oprah, haven't you ever heard of side projects? Here take this hanky and console yourself" "But your side project has become an international super-hit, why don't you call it your main project?", she takes the hanky and cosoles herself. "Such commitment.. .anyway", she continues, "because your undying devotion, we arranged a little surprise for you. Someone is backstage waiting to reunite with you forever", she says facing the audience with a big smile. One tear drop starts coming from Kamal's right eye. "Oprah... did you find Geor...?" But before he can complete the sentence, Cartman comes running out from backstage wearing a dress and crazy make-up shouting, "Wha-ever wha-ever, I'll do what I want!", Nagraj from Raj comics comes out shooting snakes at him, Oprah starts to scream, a cameraman falls off from above, a cow jumps into the audience, a fire starts.... Far far away in Himachal Pradesh, in an orchard where no roads reach, a man with a very long beard smiles and switches off the tv in his little cottage. He picks up his papers and felt pens and a basket of lunch and heads towards the door. He remembers when he first came here years ago to finish his graphic novel. He really did think he was going to go back in those days. He hadn't understood the tug of the mountains yet. He walks towards the path he knows so well now. He walks for a few hours, a half smile plastered on his face, he stops to rest under a tree and have some lunch. "Side project...", he murmurs to himself... just then an apple falls on his head.

Hi! In Jul '07, we add Tulu to our list of 15 languages in which plays have been staged at Ranga Shankara! A proud achievement indeed for a theatre which is yet to celebrate its third birthday. An achievement we owe greatly to you, our audiences and Bangalore's theatre practitioners for having made play-a-day a habit. The Tulu play Kariyajjerna Kathekulu, penned by D K Chowta and directed by Krishnamurthy Kavattar shows on 12th and 13th.
Benaka's Sattavara Neralu comes back this month. This masterpiece of B V Karanth has done an incredible 305 shows and retains a major portion of the cast and crew of the original production. The play has some powerful performances and pithy Purandara Dasa songs with catchy tunes (composed by Karanth himself). C R Simha's Vedike brings Karnad Company, which is a mélange of all Karnad plays strung together beautifully. Several old favourites in Kannada return in July making it a good month for catching up on something you have missed.
Chennai's Theatre Nisha is bringing What's to be Done with Sathe directed by V Balakrishnan who is an alumnus of NSD. Bangalore's S Srikrishna premieres Waiting for Lefty.
Anju Sudarshan at the café is cooking up some great Thai and Lebanese dishes these days. And throwing in sinful home-made desserts too.
See you at RS!

"THE VALLEY OF FLOWERS AND HEMKUND SAHIB, UTTARANCHAL" . In 1982, the smallest national park in the Himalayas was created to protect the catchment area of the Pushpavati River. This stream emerges from a glacier then tumbles downward to meet the Ganges. It follows the contours of the steep valley that leads to Hemkunt Sahib, and is the constant companion of the pilgrims who trudge upward on the footpath. The stream's source is in a valley which British mountaineer Frank S. Smythe passed through in 1931 after a successful climbing expedition. He was awed by the variety of wildflowers growing there, and returned in 1937 to collect more than two hundred botanical species. His 1938 book entitled The Valley of Flowers brought this remote Himalayan meadow to the attention of the world. • Duration: 7 days. • Terrain: Moderate. • Distance: 45 kms of trek for 4 days. • Date: 3 August 2007. • Tariff: Rs 9,999/- Per head.
