"India continues to expand and upgrade its airport infrastructure to keep pace with the demands of its rapidly growing economy. In 2005/6 domestic passenger numbers grow by a massive 50 per cent, while the volume of international air travellers recorded an increase of 25 per cent. In response to growing airline traffic, the Indian government projects that as much as US$33 billion will be invested in airport development over 10 years from 2005, with US$8.5 billion of this being allocated by 2010.
Projects already underway include the upgrading of existing airports at Bangalore and Hyderabad; Delhi, Cochin and Mumbai’s facilities too are being modernized and expanded with private sector participation. In addition three brand new ‘greenfield’ airports are planned for Delhi, Mumbai and Goa.
India’s extensive airport network is made up of 126 facilities in all, 11 of which handle international flights and 45 of which are earmarked for renewal, modernization and refurbishment over the coming months and years. With new and low-cost carriers contributing to demand and with air cargo volumes also growing rapidly, India’s airports are very much in the spotlight; inter airport India 2008 offers a proven method for suppliers to access this important market."
