Potpourri: Aviation and a Modern World!

# John Walton, son of the legendary Sam Walton, died recently in a small-plane crash. Its just too ironic considering the way his dad built his retail empire: Walton Sr. used to fly over a town in his small plane for deciding on the best Walmart store location! Sam would say: "There's another good reason I don't like jets. You can't get down low enough to really tell what's going on, the way I could in my little planes."

# While we are at the subject of aviation, DGCA has reduced the number of hours requirement for a CPL from 250 to 200! "Solo hours reduced to 100 hrs instead of 150 and X-country to 20 hrs instead of 25. great news IT IS!!! But they have not revised the requirements for IR... which means that the 50hrs of X-ctry.. and 40hrs instruments stay in place... and even the 150 hrs of solo stays untouched... (refer Schedule II.. Section "O")... hopefully they'll amend that as well... cause if they dont then it becomes a very tight game with little margins... imagine this.. 150 hrs of solo+ 20 hrs of intruments(considering we do 20 on sim)+ 10 hrs night+ 10 hrs checks+ 10 hrs dual X-ctry+ 10 hrs pre solo=210 hrs... and thats with considering everything goes the way I put it... little deviation and u add hrs... and i am not considering the possibility of fitting in the multi engine requiments in this.. otherwise the breathing room is even smaller... Lets keep our fingers crossed..." Mabe its driven by the acute shortage of pilots in the booming Indian aviation industry? Maybe not. DGCA wouldn't say. Anyways, details here.

# But then, do we really need any flying hours requirement? This guy obviously doesn't think so. All of 14-years age, driving a van he allegedly stole from his grandmother, he arrived at the airport, found a a Cessna 152 unlocked with the key inside, started it up, and found himself airborne! But, of course, the Unexpected Proved Inevitable. I guess flying training is needed after all!

# Now, on a tangent, did you know that Norway has a Minister of Modernization: Morten Andreas Meyer? Looks like Norway is not alone!
