The guys at e164 have put up a non-profit DNS root server, which can map your phone numbers to various internet protocols (such as http, mailto, iax, voip, h323,irc, ftp, sip, ldap, aim, yahoo, msn, irc etc)! Based on Enum, Its a fantastic concept leading to convergence of different communication channels. I tried signing up, but it said my (Indian) number is a 'high-rate' number and hence they "would have to ask me to donate"! Hope, it'd be free soon.
Its interesting to note that web's underlying URL scheme was developed so that people can remember the easy english URLs rather than unwieldy IP addresses. We seem to have come back full circle when phone numbers will be used as sort of URL!!. :)
