Jun 29,30, Jul 1: BFS Presents: 'On The Road' Screenings
"was thinkin' about turquoise, I was thinkin' about gold, I was thinkin' about diamonds and the world's biggest necklace. As we rode through the canyons, through the devilish cold, I was thinkin' about Isis, how she thought I was so reckless. - Isis by Bob Dylan
Like so many pioneers and adventurers, cinema has always taken to the road in its search for answers. Bangalore Film Society is proud to present 'On the Road' a weekend of three classic road movies that ramble along the less beaten path in search of an elusive and essential truth.
Friday 29th June, 2007 Time: 6.30 pm Paris, Texas (1984) (USA/Germany/ France) Famous for influencing U2's seminal 'Joshua Tree' album, auteur Wim Wender's adaptation of Pulitzer prize winning playwright Sam Shepard's story of an amnesiac wanderer's dilemma as he tries to piece his life together in the quiet American pastoral is regarded not only as the director's masterpiece but as one of the finest films of the 80s. A lyrical meditation on loss and longing 'Paris, Texas' won the Palm D'Or at Cannes'84.
Saturday 30th June, 2007 Time: 6.30pm The Return (2004) (Russia) Hailed as the most promising film by a debut director in contemporary cinema, The Return follows two young brothers who take a road trip with their father who turns up one day after a mysterious twelve year absence. As the journey proceeds the trip turns into a claustrophobic battle of wills between the father and sons and the father's real identity and true nature of the so called 'fishing trip' come under suspicion. Winner of the Golden Lion at Venice '04.
Sunday 1st July, 2007 Time: 6.30pm Blackboards (2000) (Iran) Director Samira Makhmalbaf chronicles the plight of the Iranian Kurdistanis, caught amidst violent strife and a brutal terrain and for whom 'survival' is the way of life. The film follows a band of teachers who trek the terrain with blackboards hoisted over their shoulders in search of students who are too engaged in acts of survival to feel the want for education. "Roof-Top film Fest (RTFF) is a film festival born out of the desire to provide a platform for people to enjoy movies and share their criticism in an open environment. "Roof Top Film Festivals" are typically where people get together on somebody's rooftop with a projector and a screen and watch movies which are not very popular in India or not released in multiplexes. These screenings are interspersed by independent film maker's movies and discussions on the movies screened.
The first Bangalore Roof Top Film Festival is planned on July 7, 2007. Anybody interested in taking part or help in organizing this, can edit the Bangalore Roof Top Film Festival wiki ( http://rtff.pbwiki.com/Bangalore-Roof-Top) and add themselves.

Jun 15/16: "Let's Have Sex" - Hilarious play @ Alliance Francaise
About the Play: The play is structured as a rondo -- a scene between the Husband and the Wife leads to a scene between the Wife and the Professor, etc., each one introduced by the recurring theme: "Let's have sex!" But while its characters are driven by the most basic of human emotions -- loneliness, their yearning for love, their desire to escape their problems -- they poignantly and hilariously never get past discussing, arguing about, and apostrophizing their favorite subject. "The only way to come together quickly is sex," says the Girl. "People can sit in the same office for a hundred years, meet each other at parties, drink together and go to picnics every weekend, but that won't make them as close as a single night spent together!" But for Krasnogorov's characters, consummation -- however devoutly desired -- remains distressingly elusive, for reasons perhaps only the Sister knows. An enormous success when it was staged in Moscow in 2003 by the director Roman Viktyuk, Lets Have Sex!, is a comic and philosophical tour-de-force from a master of the Russian stage.
The Cast Amjad Prawej Deepak Srinivas Ranjitha Janardhan Shilpa Rudrappa Indu Sharma

Too Much Hot Air: A contrarian view to climate debate
In an era when "Instead of having a dispassionate debate, global warming has suddenly taken on an alarmist hue, and Dissenting views are looked upon with suspicion or disdain. Doomsday ayatollahs are nothing new to human history...", a very interesting article by Amit Mitra, FICCI president. Nice to see some contrarian view.

A king who has never left his castle and his caretaker (simply called Mrs. Care) emerge from the other end of the Earth when the towers of the castle collapse! How they find their way back is told in a spell-binding play of light and shadows, by the German troupe Theater Handgemenge on 8th and 9th. Like for all our children's shows, we have arranged special shows for schools in the morning too.
Odakalu Bimba (2nd and 3rd) and Bikhre Bimb (30th Jun and 1st Jul) clock in their 25th shows. Rajit Kapur returns to perform four shows of Flowers. This play saw extremely successful shows in Mumbai recently, with audiences and critics showering praises on all aspects of the production.
Like always, old favorites on the Ranga Shankara stage come back for re-runs. Kalakunja and Tanman perform for the first time here, and bring their best productions. Shraddha by the young Vinayak Joshi is a play that's growing in popularity.
Matinees continue on Sundays. In a quick survey, we found out that our audiences feel the 3:30 show ensures they do theatre and everything else they want to on a Sunday; some others see this as an effective way of beating the evening rain!
It's a year since Anju Sudarshan began running the café at Ranga Shankara! She is working overtime on bringing new dishes onto the menu while keeping the old favorites.
See you at RS!
