"Voices from the Waters 2007, 2nd International Film Festival on Water
7th to 11th June 2007 10am to 8pm at Gurunanak Bhavan, Bangalore.
Arghyam- safe, sustainable water for all, Bangalore Film Society and Films for Freedom, Bangalore in collaboration with Water Journeys- Forum for the Fundamental Right to Water, Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, Ithaca College (FLEFF) and Urban Research Centre are proud to present the second edition of the International Film Festival on Water titled 'Voices from the Waters 2007'.
The festival, while attempting to cast light on the looming global water crisis is a vibrant, colorful celebration of 'water' in all its liquid blue glory. Featuring a stirring selection of full length films, short films, animation and documentaries - from cinema classics of Ray, Sathyu and Kasarvalli to early documentaries of Jahnu Barua and Aribam Shyam Sharma to much-acclaimed and groundbreaking new works from film makers all across the globe, the festival attempts to connect the public with everyday, mundane 'water' as the source of all life, as the platform for civilization and society, as a precious natural gift, as culture and as pure poetry and as a scarce resource increasingly commodified. The festival will also serve as a platform to the voices of grassroots level water activists from Bihar, Kerala, Rajasthan, Bengal and all across the nation who will narrate evocatively, testimonies from lives lived and spent in the name of water. Film-makers, present at the screening of their films will interact with the audience and share their experience. The four days of the film festival and storytelling will culminate with a conference which will allow the general public, film-makers, policy markers and grassroots level activists to interact on a common platform.
The Festival Conferences will focus on water equity and ecological issues. Water Equity will address the issues of how the poor will access safe, potable water for their daily necessities as well as for their livelihood, while ecological issues primarily will focus on management of water resources and sustainability.
Since its conception, the second edition of 'Voices from the Waters' has been generating a lot of national and international interest. We have received over 140 films from 40 countries across the globe for the 2007 edition. We invite you to participate in this celebration of life itself and lend further color, noise and depth to the festival. The festival venue provides you with an opportunity to exhibit/share your publications, films, songs, posters on the water issues. The space for the stalls will be provided free of cost. (on first come, first serve basis)

"Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi was not merely a sahityakarta (lyricist) but a musician of high caliber. He has covered a wide range of musical forms right from kriti to kavadichindu. Until recently, there were very few who knew of compositions other than the lively ones such as Alaippayude kanna, Kuzhaloodi manam ellam and Pullai piravi tara venum. But the reality is that Venkata Kavi has composed in so many levels - from the simple to the scholarly. He has revealed his adeptness in many musical forms like kriti, tillana, kavadichindu. He has made use of different types of kritis apart from the conventional ones with Pallavi, Anupallavi, and Charana. Venkata Kavi has also composed a few shlokas and several poems, free verses and even unconventional metric pieces similar to Arunagirinathar’ s thirupughaz

It will be Drama in Afternoon this May! Yes, quite literally. Matinees on Sunday afternoons have caught up well among theatre enthusiasts of Bangalore. While we have run matinees on all days of our annual theatre fest, it has been sporadic during the rest of the year.
May '07 will change that with a matinee every Sunday. Mallinatha Dhyana, One Day in Aashadha, Butter and Mashed Bananas, and Sankramana will perform at 3:30 PM on their Sundays in addition to the regular 7:30 PM show. Here's to a new trend in theatre!
Our much awaited Mango Party happens on Sun, May 20th. Everybody is welcome to this bash bring a kilo of an interesting variety of mango and eat as much as you can from the pool! Just CELEBRATE the King of Fruits.
Ten plays in Kannada, four in English and 31 shows is the equation for May. Many of the old favorites return for re-runs Gumma Banda Gumma, Mysooru Mallige, Butter and Mashed Bananas (this play recently ran to packed and appreciative houses in Mumbai), Chandrahasa and Sankramana (which opened in April and is all set to be another super hit from Sanket and Surendranath) are the front-runners. Natraj Honnavalli's treatment of Mallinatha Dhyana is said to be refreshing and interesting. B V Rajaram is quietly premiering his Mandra, based on S L Byrappa's eponymous novel dealing with complex relationships.
For the Ranga Shankara Café, Anju Sudarshan and her team are gearing up for a "Combo-meals and a mango month".
See you at RS!
